Canine Therapy

Navigating a healing path can require a lot of us.  Sometimes we’re able to walk calmly with the sun on our face.  Sometimes we need to crawl through the mud, rain, and thorns.  Fortunately, you get to bring a trusted companion with you, and there are few companions braver, more loving, more accepting, or more loyal than a canine.

Working with a canine helps to strengthen the work we do in therapy.  Our sessions together can move from the conversational and conceptual to the experiential.  Experiential therapies help provide my clients with in the moment opportunities to practice the change they want to see in their lives.

I have cultivated the skills and credentials as a Canine Assisted Therapist specifically because of how impactful it can be to support my client’s healing process.  Both scientific research and extensive anecdotal evidence has shown that Canine Assisted Therapy can help:

  • Decrease stress

  • Decrease depression

  • Lower anxiety

  • Process trauma

  • Move through grief

  • Build coping skills

  • Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation

  • Learn and set healthy boundaries

  • Increase focus and attention

  • Reduce blood pressure

  • Improve cardiovascular health

  • Release endorphins (the natural feel good chemical in our brains)

  • Support and motivate the therapy process

Through working with Nala, my clients often become more aware of relationship dynamics that continue to play out in their lives.  Sometimes these dynamics are reaffirming and showcase your intuitive health.  Other times you may recognize relationship dynamics that you feel are holding you back.  The gentle support of the therapeutic relationship, along with Nala’s infinite capacity for love, can turn our meetings in to opportunities for corrective relationship experiences.  Such moments often provide you clarity in to old hurts, and offer us the opportunity to work together to improve and strengthen your important current relationships.  This often coincides with increased feelings of self-confidence and self-worth.

My clients also find that working with Nala helps them to reconnect with themselves.  Often folks report that they feel a sense of disconnection to whole pieces of themselves or their past.  Through our work with Nala I support you to learn new and powerful coping skills that help to ease the sometime uncomfortable process of reconnecting to your whole self.

I'm looking forward to working together.  Please reach out to take the next steps in your healing journey.  Contact me to arrange a free in-person consultation.

"Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer."

– Dean Koontz

Meet Nala!

Nala has undergone extensive training to be certified as a therapy dog.  My wife and I adopted her in the summer of 2017 from a shelter out of New Mexico.  She is a remarkably gentle and intuitive being that is equally excited to play as she is to be a comfort in moments of pain.
